TSNO Guidelines and Criteria
Texas School Nurse of the Year
Purpose: To publicly recognize the contribution of Texas school nurses by honoring one school nurse who demonstrates excellence in school nursing practice and leadership in school health.
Eligibility:
A. Only one nominee from each region may be submitted.
B. Nominee must be:
1) A registered professional nurse.
2) A member of TSNO/NASN currently and for the two preceding years.
C. Nominee must have five years experience as a school nurse, and
currently practicing full-time as a school nurse. More than 50% of the nominee’s time must be spent in direct care.
D. Nominee may not be on the TSNO Executive Committee or be an officer of NASN at the time of nomination.
E. Evidence of excellence in school nursing practice must be based on Scope and
Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice
(National Association of School Nurses and American Nurses Association, 2005).

Procedure for Submission of Application:
Must submit:
A. Completed TSNO Nomination Form.
B. Letter from regional president stating support and rationale for nomination.
C. Curriculum Vitae separate from Narrative and signed by candidate.
D. Narrative describing the nominee’s contribution in each of the categories named in the Scope and Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice
(National Association of School Nurses and American Nurses Association, 2005).
(See Eligibility: “E”). Narrative should follow the categories exactly in outline form and must be signed by the candidate.
E. Supporting letters of recommendation:
1) Maximum of six (6) letters
2) Letters may be from school nurse peers, administrators, supervisors, teachers, parents, students, or others.
3) Letters should describe specific issues or topics related to nominee’s qualifications for the award. Use Scope and Standards of Professional School Nursing Practice
(National Association of School Nurses and American Nurses Association, 2005).
F. Photos of nominee in action with students or other appropriate situations.
G. Information should be submitted in an organized form using an 8 ½ x 11 –inch
folder or binder NOT to exceed 20 pages (20 one-sided or 10 two-sided pages.)
No three (3) ring or spiral binders/folders will be accepted. The original and 4 copies must be submitted to the Nominations Coordinator.
Application must be postmarked NO LATER THAN May 15
